Good Will Ambassador – Kevin Mills
Hello, my name is Kevin Mills. In February of 2009 at the age of 28 I sustained a spinal cord injury while attending my sister’s wedding in Cuba. I was swimming in the ocean when a large wave picked me up and drove me head first into the sand. I am a C6 quadriplegic as a result.
From November of 2009 through to April of 2011, I periodically traveled to attend an Activity Based Therapy program in the United States. I made amazing gains including an increase in core balance and strength, increased arm function, and more independence. I am a very active person and took special interest in rock climbing and had competed as a short distance runner prior to my accident. After my injury I was drawn to hand-cycling and I cycle up to 80 - 100 km on a daily basis. I have completed 6 full marathons and 24 half marathons in both may wheelchair and hand-cycle. My next challenge is to bike across Canada.
Prior to my accident, I worked as an Advanced Care Paramedic. I am unable to continue my career in paramedicine so I decided to go back to school where I have completed an honours degree in Justice and Public Safety through the University of Guelph.
I sit on the Board of Directors at Walk It Off, a not-for-profit Spinal Cord Recovery that my wife Heather and I founded and manage; taking special interest in providing peer support to clientele.
Secretary - Nicole Davenport R.Kin, BKin Hon, DOMP Candidate
Hello Everyone! My name is Nikki, I am a Registered Kinesiologist and a Neuro-Recovery trainer at Walk It Off Spinal Cord Recovery and Wellness Center.
I attended the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), graduating with a degree in Kinesiology. During my time completing my undergrad, I had the opportunity to intern with the UOIT Varsity Athletic Therapy clinic. I also volunteered my time as a research assistant, looking at the effects of exercise on fall prevention in post-stroke patients.
After completing my undergraduate degree, I continued my education through Humber College taking a post-graduate certificate in Exercise Science and Lifestyle Management. I was introduced to Walk It Off and its philosophy through a co-op opportunity. Within a few short days of starting, I soon realized how accurately their philosophy paralleled my own. I was later offered a permanent position on the team at Walk It Off as a Neuro-Recovery Trainer.
A year into my practice I knew I wanted to learn more with my hands, so I can provide more to my clientele. In September of 2018, I enrolled in a Diploma program at the Southern Ontario College of Osteopathy to study the manual practice of Osteopathy. I plan on completing this diploma in November of 2022.
Outside of WIO, I have a passion for being outdoors whether that means walking through a foreign country, hiking at a local provincial park or being on my bike through the streets of my hometown. Road cycling is my biggest passion, and next year I will be biking across the entire country of Canada with my best friend Kevin Mills! And I could not be more excited.
